The Power of Prayer

Mike Sefton

I believe there is power through prayer. I learned that at an early age. I also accept the fact that our prayers don’t go unnoticed even if they are not answered the way or in the time frame that we ask. Who are we to put stipulations on our Lord?  It was said by a good pastor friend of mine, “Bumpy roads lead to beautiful places.”  If you think back over your own life, I’m sure you can relate. Life wasn’t going as you had planned, your prayer life increased and you continued in life, just hoping for a better day.

I know I’ve shared some of my stories with some of you, but for those of you who were not present at the time, I’d like to share one of my first big prayers with you.  You see before I met my wife, Kay, I was engaged to someone else. I thought I’d found the right one, but after we were engaged, we didn’t agree on different things in life. What was right for one, was not right for the other and vice versa. We ended up breaking the engagement, and I just stayed home for a few months. But on September 28, 1980, that all changed. I had one of those long prayers that night and ask God for his help. I remember asking Him to give me direction on where I should go and what I should do.  I went to town that night to go to the reception of 2 friends of mine. I was told their reception was at the Eagles Lodge and found out when I got there it was not.  I was talking to a friend of mine there and ask who that was on the dance floor. He said it was his sister-in-law visiting from Missouri. A couple weeks later he encouraged me to ask Kay out on a date. I did, and 2 months later, we were married. That was 44 years ago. So as you can see, I’ve seen first hand that there is power through prayer. By this experience and others, I am reminded of a verse in Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you shall find. Knock and the door will be opened to you.”

We don’t always get those type of immediate results from our prayers, I know. Sometimes we are answered not in the way we want, but in the best way. Our minds are of finite thinking because we live in a timeline that is limited here on earth. God’s timeline is eternity. This reminds me of the last verse of the hymn, Amazing Grace. “When we’ve been there 10,000 years, bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we first begun.

So it is my thought to encourage this way of thinking into our lives. Let it be your story and uplift people through your experiences. Let everyone know where prayer has lead to miracles in your life. Take this small step to reach out and help others. You can be the beacon of hope that leads a friend to eternal happiness in Christ!!!

Dear Lord,

We call upon You to help us. Help us through our conflicts in life. We know You see our problems as temporary. We know you have the correct answers to our problems. Lead us with Your love and grace. Help us be a better example of You today, than we were yesterday. Forgive us of our sins and shortcomings. Lord, I thank you that I can call on You to work wonders in my life through prayer.

In Jesus name, Amen.
